What to Expect from Temple of Torment Slot

Introduction

It’s relatively easy to find an Egyptian slot in online casinos. Almost every game provider dabbles in this genre. But then some elevate a generic theme to its utmost capabilities. And one of those studios is Hacksaw Gaming. The game provider released Temple of Torment in May 2023, at a time when there were already several competing slots in the ancient Egyptian theme, such as Ankh of Anubis, or the famous Book of Dead and Book of Fallen. Yet, Hacksaw’s take on the subject is quite interesting.

Temple of Torment focuses on a divine clash between Ra, the sun god, and Anubis, the god of the dead and a guide to the underworld. Although this isn’t the first slot to bring two deities into a war against each other – a recent example comes from Pragmatic Play’s Zeus vs. Hades – the production and design of this Hacksaw slot easily surpasses its competitors. But as is usually the case with slots, mere visuals are not enough. Therefore, let’s take a detailed look at the slot from every relevant aspect.

How to Play Temple of Torment

Description

Temple of Torment opens on a stony grid comprising 5 reels, 4 rows, and 14 pay lines. Players participating in this spectacular war of gods can start with a minimum bet of 0.10 coins. In comparison, the maximum betting limit is pinned at 100 coins per spin. Against the feasibility of the betting limit, the slot offers a massive winning potential that extends up to 10,000x the bet. Also, Hacksaw has rated Temple of Torment 3 out of 5 in variance, which suggests it’s a medium volatility slot

As for the Return to Player, Temple of Torment RTP is a decent 96.20%. So, for every 100 coins you wager, expect around 96.20 coins returned to you. Obviously, the value is theoretical and might count to nothing in a shorter gaming session. Lastly, the slot’s hit frequency is about 27%, implying that a win might occur within every 4 spins, which is pretty decent for a mid-variance slot.

Our first impression of the game was terrific. The slot offers plenty of options to net big wins, as evident from the features mentioned in the info section. But given that it’s a medium variance game, big wins take their time to show up. Mid and low-rollers might find Temple of Torment a bit more fascinating than high-rollers. Still, as with a Hacksaw slot, any random spin can generate something extraordinary. But for the most part, payouts are not that substantial.

Theme, Design, and Sound

Temple of Torment is an Egyptian-themed slot that represents a fictional clash between two powerful gods: Ra and Anubis. The sun god Ra flies high into the sky, whereas Anubis stands grounded. The temple or the grid panel is the arena where their combat takes place on the dedicated reels. But the background provides a rather ethereal experience, as high mountains and clouds occupy most of the space.

The contrast between Ra and Anubis is also visible through the color gradient: the sky behind Ra is golden, whereas the one above Anubis is bleakly dark. The background score is a tense variation of the classic ancient Egyptian music. But the most highlighting auditory elements come from the eagle (for Ra) and a beast growl (for Anubis) that also sounds like a dinosaur. Overall, Hacksaw delivers on the grandiosity of visuals and sounds that fit aptly with the warring gods and their stature.

Symbol Payouts

The slot has 11 paying symbols, including 10 to A card royals that offer 5x to 10x the stake when five similar ones hit the payline. Next in line are premium symbols comprising the shen ring, eye of Ra, Ankh, Anubis, and Ra. These high-paying symbols offer 15x to 30x the stake for landing a five-of-a-kind winning combination.

But it’s the wild symbols that pay the highest among all. Landing 5 wilds in a spin provides 40x the stake—also, the wild substitutes for all the other symbols in the paytable. There are also non-paying but special game symbols like the Anubis and Ra FS scatters and a Wild Golden Scarab symbol. We’ll discuss them in the following section.

How to Win at Temple of Torment

Features and Bonuses

Along with the Wild Golden Scarab symbol, the Temple of Torment provides dedicated features for Ra and Anubis. Let’s find out what they are:

Wild Golden Scarab Symbols

Upon landing, a Wild Golden Scarab symbol will expand if there’s a certainty that its expansion will lead to at least one winning combination. Suppose line wins are possible only in a specific direction (upwards or downwards towards the edge). In that case, the scarab will expand in that direction only.

Every position the Wild Golden Scarab covers during expansion gets counted as a wild symbol. If there is more than one Wild Golden Scarab symbol, all of them will expand in the same direction. If the Wild Golden Scarab doesn’t expand, it is counted as a 1×1 wild symbol. Also, only one scarab can land on each reel.

If a Wild Golden Scarab cuts through a wild symbol during expansion, it activates the wild and provides a multiplier applicable to the entire symbol. Possible multiplier values range between x2 to x200. If more than one multiplier is part of a winning combination, their values are added first and then multiplied by the bet amount.

Anguish of Anubis

Hitting 3 Anubis FS scatters in the base game triggers the Anguish of Anubis bonus game with 10 free spins. If you get 4 or 5 Anubis FS scatters in the base game, the number of free spins won would be 12 or 14, respectively.

The feature offers a better chance of landing Wild Golden Scarab symbols and wilds than the base game. Also, wilds become sticky during this feature and remain on the reels until all free spins are exhausted. Getting 2 or 4 additional Anubis FS scatters during this bonus game awards 2 or 3 extra free spins, respectively.

Reign of Ra

Getting 3, 4, or 5 Ra FS scatters in the base game triggers the Reign of Ra bonus feature with 10, 12, or 14 free spins, respectively. A multiplier from an activated wild symbol gets added to the Total Multiplier meter above the reels during this feature. Once the wild multiplier adds to the Total Multiplier, the latter activates, applying the accumulated multiplier to the current win amount.

Like the Anguish of Anubis feature, you hit 2 or 3 additional Ra FS scatters while the bonus game is active and awards 2 or 4 extra free spins

Buy Bonus

The Buy Bonus option gives you a straightaway entry into the bonus feature or a special modifier. But note that the buy option is not available in some regions.

The USP of Hacksaw Gaming slots is their ingenious design, excellent payout potential, and superbly intricate features. Our Final Words

Final Verdict

If you have a special affinity towards Anubis, then this is not the slot for you. Even though one expects a head-to-head battle between the two deities, it is pretty clear Ra is the winner here. Its symbol payout value is higher, and the Reign of Ra is also a more potent bonus feature. But the experience of visualizing a terrifying war between two godly powerhouses has been well executed by Hacksaw. In short, design aficionados would find Temple of Torment worth looking at for its simple yet heavily immersive aesthetics.

However, mere design cannot hold one for long. After a point, the visuals start becoming redundant, and what becomes most needed then is the gameplay and mechanics. And to Hacksaw’s credit, they have done a decent job in that department. However, the problem is much of what the game offers we have already seen in previous Hacksaw slots such as Dork Unit and King Carrot. So, there’s nothing exceptional going on here. But the slot still stands because of its medium variance and the bonus features.

If you aim to win big stacks of cash from this slot, try doing it via the main gameplay. The Buy Bonus option charges a hefty sum and, more often than not, provides value below the wagered money. On the contrary, once you get your hands on Reign of Ra or even Anguish of Anubis via the base game, there are much better chances of landing a handsome sum. And that rare hit might occur anytime that draws a prize worth ogling at. After all, the game can scale up to 10,000x the bet amount.

If you want to try some high volatility slots that bring you crazy winnings, we would suggest going for Wanted Dead or a Wild and Bloodthirst, which both have max wins above 10,000x, and crazy things can happen right after the 1st spin.
